About the album
This is Segun Akinola’s soundtrack to the three-part ITV series ‘Stephen’.

Produced by Hat Trick productions and starring Sharlene Whyte, Hugh Quarshie and Steve Coogan, the series focuses on the investigation into the racially motivated murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 and his parents, Doreen and Neville Lawrence’s astonishing crusade to achieve justice for their son.

It was clear from the outset that the music would need to strike a delicate balance between supporting the emotion and suspense displayed on screen. This led to an approach that combined ambient electronic music using bespoke synth sounds made by myself, a sampled clock and homemade pads made from sampled recordings alongside utilizing electro-acoustic techniques to manipulate audio files, and piano to support more delicate moments. The result is an atmospheric and rhythmic score that works alongside the strong visuals to subtly underpin the emotional toll experienced by those on screen. – Segun Akinola
