About the album

This is the soundtrack to the film ‘Coppelia’ by award-winning composer Maurizio Malagnini (Call the Midwife, Peter and Wendy, The Paradise). Maurizio has combined orchestral music, delicate piano melodies and contemporary synth sounds to provide a stunning score to the film.

‘Coppelia’ combines enchanting animation and live action dance in a modern retelling of the love story between Swan and Franz, jeopardized by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Coppelius and his uncannily beautiful protégée Coppelia. Through Swan’s quest to uncover the truth about the charismatic doctor, the townspeople come to learn that in an increasingly image conscious culture – it’s never been more important to be yourself.

The film is directed by Jeff Tudor, Steven De Beul and Ben Tesseur and produced by Bruno Felix, Adrienne Liron, Janneke van de Kerkhof and Femke Wolting, with international ballet stars Michaela DePrince as Swan, Daniel Camargo as Franz, Darcey Bussell as the Mayor and Irek Mukhamedov as Baker, and choreography by Ted Brandsen.

‘When I was commissioned to compose the music for this new Film-Ballet version of Coppelia I was excited to revisit the world of Hoffmann’s story and to give a modern twist to it with a completely original score.

The music I have composed for Coppelia takes compositional elements from the style of Belle Époque Classical ballet: the story is told using a wide dynamic range from intimate chamber music to epic full orchestral crescendos and sweeping melodies that will grow and develop with the characters. The beautiful dancing moments of the Pas de Deux (Swan’s Dream) and Pas de Trois (The Nightmare) will unfold the hidden secrets of the emotional world of the characters as in a classical Ballet.’ – Maurizio Malagnini
